Brew City Boost 3.5L Ecoboost F150 Dyno Results!

Ford made a bold statement in 2011 when it announced the new premium engine for the F150 is the 3.5L twin turbo EcooBoost. They had a really cool story about the torture tests it was put through. People were skeptical at first, but the 3.5 has proven itself time and again at dragstrips, on racetracks in the Ford GT, towing, eco-swapped vintage muscle cars, and on daily drivers.  The real fun starts when you find out how much additional power can be made by properly tuning these engines!

Brew City Boost has been the leader in tuning EcoBoost F150s since 2015 and continue on to this day. We appreciate the entire community for helping us get from where we started to where we are today, thank you all!

There are quite a few options when it comes to BCB’s tunes for the 3.5. To make life easier we’ve put together some information on our 3.5L Ecoboost F150 tunes, horsepower and torque ratings, and dyno plots from our in-house Dynojet dynamometer.

Adaptive Tunes – Highlander and MacGyver

Our adaptive calibrations are a great way to get a decent bump in HP, TQ, and drivability. We designed these for ease of use, and flexibility of fuel grades, accepting 87 through 93 octane without requiring you to change tunes. If you hunger for more power, then a jump to a custom tune is what you need.

Here are dyno plots for the newer 3.5 EcoBoost, Gen1 (2016-2016), and the Gen2 (2017-up). All of these were run on 93 octane on our in-house dyno.

2015-2016 3.5L EcoBoost (Gen1)

Stock         : 372 TQ / 325 HP

MacGyver  : 419 TQ / 364 HP

Highlander : 452 TQ / 386 HP

Gains over Stock:

MacGyver   +47 TQ / +39 HP

Highlander  +80 TQ / +61 HP

2017-up 3.5L EcoBoost (Gen2)

Stock         : 409 TQ / 332 HP

MacGyver  : 440 TQ / 368 HP

Highlander : 455 TQ / 396 HP

Gains over Stock:

MacGyver   +31 TQ / +36HP

Highlander  +46 TQ / +64 HP

Any tuning device you buy from BCB will include both our Highlander and MacGyver adaptive tunes for free, we also sell them as a pair for a really good price (if you already own a tuning device). Being an adaptive tune means you can be flexible at the pump with what octane gas you run, 87 to 93 octanes (E20 max) can all be run with either of these tunes and the output will automatically adjust accordingly. The Highlander tune is our daily performance adaptive tune and MacGyver is the Tow variant. You can also choose to get a custom tune to really pump up those numbers if you desire more!

BCB Custom Tuning

When we do custom tuning we prefer to see premium fuel in the tank, however we support custom tuning for all fuel grades. The dynos we will look at have all been done here on the BCB Dyno and all while running 93 octane pump gas.

2015-2016 3.5L EcoBoost (Gen1)

Stock                   : 372 TQ / 325 HP

BCB 93 Custom  : 496 TQ / 419 HP

Gains over Stock : +124TQ / +94 HP

2018-2020 2.7L EcoBoost (Gen2)

Stock                   : 409 TQ / 332 HP

BCB 93 Custom  : 500 TQ / 425 HP

Gains over Stock : +91TQ / +93 HP

These are great examples of what you can expect power-wise with one of our Custom tunes for your 3.5 EcoBoost F150. These custom tunes are supported on any device we tune for including EZ LYNK , COBB Tuning, and SCT Performance & Bully Dog.  We also include our two adaptive octane tunes with the purchase of any tuning device, and you can add a custom tune at any time!

BCB Custom Ethanol Tuning

For those that don’t know the big differentiator between Gen1 (2011-2016) and Gen2 (2017-up) is the addition of Port Injection (PI) on the Gen2 engines. The Gen1 design only utilized Direct Injection (DI) and with the addition of PI to the Gen2 the fueling system capacity allows us to run E50 without any fuel system mods, just a tune calibrated for the fuel.  What this means for the Gen1 engines is we are limited in Ethanol content, E30 is about as far as you can go without any fuel system mods and E50 is capable with a simple boost a pump or intank fuel pump upgrade like a DW400.

2017-up 3.5L EcoBoost (Gen2)

Stock                    : 409 TQ / 332 HP

BCB E50 Custom : 580 TQ / 505 HP

Gains over Stock  : +171TQ / +173 HP

When running an Ethanol tune ensuring you have the correct amount of Ethanol content in your fuel is critical. The only way to make sure about this is to test your fuel. Ideally, we would like to see your actual Ethanol content in the tank of your truck be within +/-5% of target the tune calls for. If it’s out of range, we can always adjust your tune specifically for the Ethanol content you are getting at the pump. There are two acceptable methods of testing your Ethanol, one is the low-tech test-tube method, and the other is a real time, always on, Ethanol content sensor and physical gauge. Don’t forget we also have a cool Ethanol calculator that can help you determine how much of each fuel you need to add to achieve your desired Ethanol blend. If you are blending to achieve a content less than E85 you must always blend the Ethanol with premium pump gas.

Tuning these 3.5’s brings a lot of joy to not only the owners but also us here at BCB. We hope you have enjoyed this coverage of the 3.5 EcoBoost F150’s. Thanks everyone we love and appreciate all the support over the years and are looking forward to what the future will bring!
